Turn a screen recording into a GIF

Hit record, click through your app, and get a GIF you can drop in a tweet, a cold email or a README.

  • Free
  • Nothing to install
  • Never leaves your browser

Record your screen

Pick a tab, a window or your whole screen. Nothing to install.

Any length works. Clips under about a minute make GIFs small enough for X and email. Longer ones take longer to convert and come out bigger, so you can trim and speed them up.

Your video never leaves this tab. Nothing is uploaded or saved.

How it works

From screen recording to GIF in three steps

  1. 1

    Record or upload

Hit record and pick a tab, a window or your whole screen, then click through your app. Already have a video? Drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM.

  2. 2

    Trim and tune

Drag the handles to keep only the good part. Pick a width, a frame rate and a speed. 2× speed turns a slow walkthrough into a snappy GIF.

  3. 3

    Download and share

Get the GIF in seconds, with a size check for X, email and GitHub. Drop it into a tweet, a cold email or a README.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a screen recording into a GIF?

Click Start recording, choose the tab, window or screen to share, and click through what you want to show. Stop the recording, trim it, pick a size and click Create GIF. If you already have a recording, upload it instead.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Recording uses your browser's built-in screen sharing, so it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a computer with nothing to install. On a phone, record with your phone's screen recorder and upload the video here.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. Your video is recorded, trimmed and turned into a GIF entirely inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to our servers or saved, and it's gone when you close the tab. The tool only remembers your width, frame rate and speed choices on this device.

Is there a time limit?

There's no hard limit. Clips under about a minute work best: GIFs get big quickly and longer ones take longer to make. For a long recording, trim it to the important part or use 2× or 3× speed.

How big can a GIF be for X (Twitter), email or GitHub?

X accepts GIFs up to 15 MB and GitHub up to 10 MB. For email, aim for under 2 MB so it loads fast and doesn't get clipped. The tool tells you which of these your GIF fits once it's made.

How do I make my GIF smaller?

Lower the width (640px is plenty for most tweets and emails), drop the frame rate to 10 fps, trim the start and end, or speed it up. Recordings of apps with little movement come out much smaller than video footage.

Can I convert an MP4 or MOV to a GIF?

Yes. Upload any video your browser can play: MP4, WebM and most MOV files. Some iPhone and Mac recordings use HEVC, which Chrome may not play. If that happens, open this page in Safari.

Does it add a watermark?

No. The GIF is yours: no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many you make.
